The announcement that Bayern Munich had signed reigning Ballon d’Or holder Harry Kane to a new contract until 2029 was massive. However, David Ornstein’s report that Kane would become the top earner in Europe sent shockwaves across the continent. Just how accurate the report is remains unclear—can we be sure someone like Kylian Mbappé does not earn more at Real Madrid?—but one can at least assume Kane is among the top candidates.
Until now, we had no indication of the exact figures. As reporters worked
tirelessly to break the story first, Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg shared this update:
Harry Kane is now FC Bayern’s highest-paid player, overtaking Jamal Musiala!
His new salary: MORE than €30m gross per year, including potential bonuses. One of the biggest contracts in European football (Top 3).
Bonuses linked to domestic titles, Champions League success, another Ballon d’Or, goals and assists.
His new three-year contract runs until 2029. No option to extend. NO release clause.
It is a shame that the closest report to an exact number is still an estimation, but it will have to do. It is also important to note that Ornstein mentioned the new contract starts once his current one ends in 2027, with his salary remaining at around €25 million until then.
Tying up over €60 million for Kane, who will be 34 by then, certainly carries risk. However, it is a risk Bayern is clearly more than willing to take to keep one of the world’s best players.
