The San Francisco 49ers announced they released veteran tight end Ross Dwelley to make room for defensive lineman Shakel Brown. Dwelley signed with the Niners on May 2.
Dwelley, 30, didn’t play in the 49ers’ first preseason game. Instead, the 49ers gave Brayden Willis (25) and Jake Tonges (26) the majority of snaps at tight end against Denver last week.
George Kittle and Luke Farrell are making the roster. The 49ers want to see what they have in Tonges and Willis by giving them as many live reps as possible.
There’s no secret as to who Dwelley is as a player.
Brown signed with the 49ers’ practice squad in September 2024 and was one of four defensive tackles to work out with the Niners last week. He’s 6’3″, 295 pounds, and was undrafted after the 2023 NFL Draft.
Defensive tackle is a position where the 49ers need depth to get through a preseason game after C.J. West hyperextended his knee against the Las Vegas Raiders on Thursday during a joint practice. Heading into Saturday’s game, Brown joins Alfred Collins, Kalia Davis, Sebastian Valdez, Bruce Hector, and Demone Harris as the healthy players on the roster.
