During his training camp press conference on Tuesday morning, Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Omar Khan disclosed that defensive backs Jalen Ramsey and Donte Kent would be placed on the physically unable to perform list to start training camp. Just a few hours after Khan spoke, there was a shocking late addition to the PUP list in Steelers star cornerback Joey Porter Jr.
Both Khan and Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy did not name Porter Jr. when listing players who were dealing with injuries
to start camp, so this move comes as a surprise to most.
Porter Jr. is currently eligible for an extension that would pay him upwards of 30 million dollars per season. While Khan and the organization have expressed interest in extending the corner, a deal has yet to materialize. It’s hard to imagine that Porter Jr. would be placed on the PUP list for any contractual reasons, rather than simply staging a “hold-in,” much like he did at OTAs.
Interestingly enough, ESPN’s Brooke Pryor said that while no details of a potential injury were disclosed to the media today, Porter Jr. was seen on an exercise bike off and on during OTAs.
For now, there isn’t too much reason to be concerned given the fact that details about any injury have not been revealed. As the team is set for their first practice tomorrow at Saint Vincent College, they will be without two of their top defensive backs.
