Newcastle United continues to cast a wide net in its search for defensive reinforcements, with full-backs on both sides remaining one of the club’s priority positions to strengthen this summer.
According to TEAMtalk, in a fresh link to a player not reported at any point earlier this summer, Newcastle has made contact with Sevilla over versatile defender Joaquin Martinez Gauna, also known as Oso, as it explores a potential move for the 23-year-old.
“Sevilla left-back Joaquin Martinez Gauna is attracting
serious interest, with TEAMtalk understanding that Fiorentina are battling Newcastle United and other sides for his signature this summer,“ the report says. ”Newcastle have already made contact with Sevilla to gauge the situation, while Tottenham and Nottingham Forest are also monitoring the Spaniard closely and have asked for conditions of a deal. Fulham have also been mentioned as potential suitors by sources.“
TEAMtalk also makes clear that Fiorentina has made the most progress in the race for the transfer, with the Serie A club advancing discussions and Oso open to moving abroad this summer.
Oso’s contract with Sevilla runs through 2027 and includes a €20 million (£17.4 million) release clause, making the transfer rather feasible for Newcastle on the financial front. However, TEAMtalk reports he could be available for less as Sevilla looks to improve its financial position and doesn’t wait for suitors to reach that figure.
Oso is capable of playing at left-back or further forward on the left wing, with the Spaniard making 30 appearances in all competitions last season, contributing two goals and three assists.
Newcastle’s early contact with Sevilla suggests the Magpies remain active in the market, but we’ll have to wait and see the signature in the paper and the announcement posted on the official website before we believe anything.
