The Daily Mail’s Craig Hope has revealed the first details of Newcastle United’s proposed new stadium project, including a few leaked pictures of the architectural plans.
“Newcastle Confidential can today exclusively reveal the first image of the club’s ambitious plans for a new super-stadium in the city,” Hope wrote.
The early designs suggest a modern structure inspired by Allianz Arena, the stadium of German giants Bayern Munich.
“The drawing… shows a cross-section of a new stadium. The bowl-like
design has two tiers and hints at a bubble-wrap facade, like Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena,” Hope wrote.
The plans remain in development, with no final decision made yet on whether NUFC would relocate or just expand St. James’ Park.
“Sources have stressed that both architectural images have been updated, and that plans have since evolved significantly,” Hope wrote.
According to Hope, Newcastle’s owners have requested further details before committing to any particular project.
“It is understood chief executive David Hopkinson and chief operating officer Brad Miller were sent away with clear instructions… to return with specific information on both a new build and a St James’ Park renovation,” Hope wrote. “A new stadium is said to appeal to both the executive team and the ownership.”
Regarding the location, Leazes Park has emerged as the leading place to build a new stadium if the project moves forward.
“Leazes Park remains the most likely site… with a capacity of at least 65,000,” Hope wrote. “The project… has moved beyond the exploration stage,” Hope wrote. “Work is intensifying to provide ownership with the specific details they need to make the call.”
