Johnny Dawkins graduated from Duke in 1986 after leading Duke to a 37-3 season and nearly a national championship.
He came back as an assistant coach after his NBA career ended and helped Duke win the 2001
national championship, something he says is his career high point: ‘[It’s] the pinnacle of success in your profession, winning a national championship as a collegiate athlete or coach. To accomplish that was something that I’ll remember for the rest of my life.”
He succeeded tremendously at Duke as both a player and coach and this October he’ll return to Cameron for the first time since leaving for Stanford in 2008.
It’s bound to be an emotional trip for Dawkins, who knew such great success in the building, but like Bobby Hurley last season, he’s coming in with his own team and his team of course would love to win here.
He’s always seemed like such a good guy. it’s nice that he’s going to be back here and of course, that almost certainly means that Coach K will turn up to honor his return as well, so it should be a great time for everyone.
