In an interview with Esquire magazine, FC Barcelona star Pedri was asked to name the strongest teams in the Champions League right now. His answer included the usual suspects, but had one notable omission.
He decided exclude Bayern Munich from his list.
This is despite the fact that FC Bayern are having an amazing season so far. The question presented to the Barça midfielder was part of a longer interview where he touched on a vast number of topics. Here, Pedri was asked which rivals he sees as the “strongest”.
“PSG, the current champions,” said Pedri. “Arsenal is also a very strong team. And I’d always include City and Real Madrid among the contenders.”
PSG and Arsenal are fair answers, they are both powerhouses in their own right. Manchester City, however, have not been very sharp this season, and Real Madrid are in a full blown crisis under Xabi Alonso. If they get to be included, then why not Bayern Munich?
It’s possible that Pedri just forgot. Or maybe he doesn’t rate Bayern Munich. After all, his Barcelona team demolished the Bavarians the last time they met. That recent triumph ended a long string of humiliating defeats — so maybe this is just a case of a short memory.
In any case, Bayern Munich fans will not be concerned by anything Pedri says. The real talking is done on the pitch, and — if Barcelona manage to qualify for the Round of 16 — there is a solid chance the two FCBs will meet again. When that happens, any differences can be settled once and for all.
