The Portland Trail Blazers are fresh off a win against the San Antonio Spurs, a feel-good start to the 2026 calendar year. The Utah Jazz are on tap tomorrow. If Portland weren’t so random, it’d be easy
to predict a three-game winning streak and a genuine hot streak on the rise.
As Portland fans know, though, the Blazers are hard to predict. They’re capable of winning against or losing to any team in the league at any given time. That’s better than the eternal losing they’ve been doing the past couple seasons, but real success requires more.
Here’s my question as I’m musing over Blazers Basketball on a Sunday night. IS there more in the offing? Are these Blazers capable of winning a title as constructed, even if everything goes perfectly right?
Look, we all know the key to contending in the NBA, or at least the easy route. You get San Antonio luck, draft Victor Wembanyama, and BAM…you’re there. Anybody could do that, including Portland. But that’s not what I’m talking about. I’m talking about THESE Blazers, with maybe a minor, reasonable addition or two.
You can assume anything you want. Say that Deni Avdija plays for years at an All-Star level, Shaedon Sharpe blossoms fully, Scoot Henderson is healthy, and Jrue Holiday plays until he’s 50. Whatever works for you, as long as it about the current Blazers roster without huge adds and the players stay in the same lanes they’re in now. (Sharpe’s going to be the best Sharpe possible. He’s not going to be LeBron.) Do you think a championship is a possibility? What would it take for you to believe they could get there?
Share your thoughts in the comment section below. I’m really curious about this one.
