This team had a big problem on each side of the roster last year that is going to make some of the “tough” choices for this roster easier to make for this coaching staff.
Offensive Key – Pass Blocking
Last season, the Broncos were chained a run game that just didn’t get it done. Not only did the backs on the roster lack raw ability to gain yardage through talent alone, but they also had one guy who could pass block decently: Javonte Williams.
One of the big keys for this year’s offense is having options at running back that can
be trusted on 3rd downs to pick up blitzers and execute blocks effectively. Of course, it means pass plays when you are behind schedule will have a better chance of success. More importantly, the backs that stay on this roster are going to be more well-rounded. The guys who have sharpened up their pass blocking skills are going to stick around. The guys who just want to run the ball without that versatility won’t stick unless they bring something special to the table.
Defensive Key – Pass Coverage
While the Bronco Defense was impressive last season, a lot of the pass coverage was being held up with smoke and mirrors. We had significant issues with coverage at ILB, safety, and corner.
You may have noticed a lot of moves this offseason to address those positions. You may also have noticed that this influx of players all have above-average coverage ability.
I think the players that make the roster are going to have athleticism, size, and pass coverage ability in a one-on-one scenario.
Good teams were able to scheme pass plays to get either our ILB or #3/#4 cornerback in a one-on-one situation and abuse them last year. If you want to see examples, just go take a peek at the Broncos’ games against the Ravens and the Bills.
The added talent across the defensive backfield is going to be the key to this defense being a real top 5 NFL defense in 2025. The key is having guys on the roster who don’t get caught flat-footed or poorly guessing against pass plays.
