Florian Wirtz produced a performance worthy of the Man of the Match award as Germany defeated Serbia 2-0, giving Jürgen Klopp his first victory as Germany manager in the process.
The Liverpool star was involved throughout the match and finished with an impressive 97 touches, constantly demanding the ball and looking to make things happen in the final third. His biggest contribution came with his goal, but Wirtz offered much more than simply finding the back of the net.
Wirtz registered three shots,
with two on target, and finished with 0.60 xG and 0.83 xGOT, demonstrating the quality of the opportunities he created and finished. He was also a major creative force, recording 0.70 xA and six key passes.
His passing was another standout aspect of the performance. Wirtz completed 74 of 79 passes, combining security in possession with the ability to move Germany forward. He also completed two of his three attempted dribbles and made 30 ball carries, including five progressive carries.
That combination of creativity, efficiency and ball progression is exactly what Germany supporters want to see from Wirtz. He was not simply waiting for opportunities to arrive; he was actively involved in creating them and helping Germany maintain control. Even more, Wirtz had an insane workrate in being a vital part of every aspect of Germany’s game plan.
His 9.3 Sofascore rating reflects just how complete his performance was (if you believe in that sort of thing).
For Klopp, seeing Wirtz produce this type of all-round display in his first win as Germany manager is an enormous positive. For Germany fans, it is another reminder that Wirtz can be one of the central figures in this team’s attack.
A goal, elite creativity, excellent passing and constant involvement made Wirtz the standout player on the night.
