Germany’s 2014 World Cup-winning squad featured a mix of established stars and exciting young talents, and few players generated as much anticipation as Julian Draxler. At just 20-years-old, the Schalke 04 academy graduate was already regarded as one of Germany’s brightest prospects thanks to his technical ability, creativity, and versatility across the attacking midfield and wing positions. Although he was one of the youngest members of Joachim Löw’s squad in Brazil, simply earning a place on the roster
spoke volumes about the confidence the coaching staff had in his potential. While Draxler’s biggest moments with the national team would come after the World Cup, he will always be remembered as a member of the squad that helped Germany capture its fourth world title.
Julian Draxler’s role in 2014
Draxler traveled to Brazil as one of Germany’s emerging attacking options. With experienced stars such as Thomas Müller, Mesut Özil, Mario Götze, André Schürrle, and Lukas Podolski ahead of him in the pecking order, opportunities were naturally limited. He made one appearance during the tournament, coming on as a late substitute in Germany’s memorable 7-1 semifinal victory over Brazil.
Even with limited minutes, Draxler gained invaluable experience by training alongside one of the strongest squads in international football. Observing veterans like Philipp Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Miroslav Klose, and Manuel Neuer helped accelerate his development as Germany completed its unforgettable run to the World Cup title.
What is Julian Draxler doing now?
Following successful spells with Schalke 04, Wolfsburg, Paris Saint-Germain, Benfica, and Al Ahli SC, Draxler remains an active professional and continues his career with Al Ahli in the Qatar Stars League. Although injuries and inconsistent playing time prevented him from fully reaching the superstar status many predicted early in his career, he still enjoyed an impressive résumé that includes domestic league titles, numerous cup trophies, and a World Cup winner’s medal.
Draxler also enjoyed one of the finest stretches of his international career after Brazil, captaining Germany to victory at the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup and winning the tournament’s Golden Ball as its best player. While his role with the national team eventually diminished, he remains a memorable member of Germany’s golden generation and one of the talented young players who helped usher in the country’s 2014 World Cup triumph.
