There are two days left in the Group Stage before the Round of 32 knockouts start. The matchups are starting to clarify — USA will face Bosnia Herzegovina, while Canada will face off against South Africa — but there’s still a lot of ambiguity, especially among the third placed teams. Scotland continues to hold on by a thread at the bottom of the qualified third place table.
Here’s your daily recap and upcoming matches for today.
Day 15 Recap
Curaçao 0-2 Cote d’Ivoire (Group E)
Goals: Pepe (7′, 64′)
Curaçao were never long for this tournament. My only
regret is that they never got to wear their awesome away kits in any of their group stage matches.
Ecuador 2-1 Germany (Group E)
Goals: Angulo (9′), Plata (77′) | Sane (2′)
Surprise? Maybe it shouldn’t be. Ecuador were a trendy dark horse pick to go deep in the tournament. This was an impressive win over a lightly rotated German side and Ecuador is now nicely placed to advance as a third place team.
Japan 1-1 Sweden (Group F)
Goals: Maeda (56′) | Elanga (62′)
It’s not the result that Sweden wanted, but the good news is that they are almost certain to progress as a third place finisher. A fun match to watch as a neutral. Lucas Bergvall was a first half substitute after an injury to Isak Hien.
Tunisia 1-3 Netherlands (Group F)
Goals: Mastouri (54′) | Skhiri [OG] (3′), Brobbey (7′), Van Hecke (62′)
The Netherlands wrapped up the group with a comprehensive win over a Tunisia team that proved itself to be pretty hapless in this tournament. Plus — a goal from Tottenham’s own Jan Paul van Hecke!
Paraguay vs. Australia (Group D)
Goals: none
Didn’t watch this match so can’t really comment on it, but a scoreless draw suits both teams — Australia finishes second in Group D, while Paraguay has done well enough to earn a trip to the next round as a third place finisher.
Turkey vs. USA (Group D)
Goals: Guler (10′), Yilmaz (31′), Ayhan (90+8) | Trusty (3′), Berhalter (49′)
The USA has a pretty impressive starting 11 in the World Cup. Their B-team… is less impressive. The USA started out hot with a third minute goal from Auston Trusty, but against a team in Turkey that had attempted 62 shots without a goal, they gave up three goals from 9 shots despite outshooting Turkey 18-9. Pochettino resting the starters was the right call with the group already wrapped up, but USA will probably need to hope that they don’t have to dig too deep on their bench in the rest of the tournament.
