The 2026/27 season began the same way for Manchester United Women as it did the men’s team. The Reds fell away from home in the season opener for the Barclays Women’s Super League, a 2-1 defeat in the capital against big spenders London City on Friday evening.
United manager Eva Olid got a glimpse of what she’s working with in terms of ownership support at United vs. other clubs, including the newcomers London City. While the hosts began a push up the table in style, the Reds fell flat at the start
of a new era.
London City got in front early thanks to an own goal. Julia Zigiotti Olme sent the ball the wrong way while attempting to clear a cross at the back post. It beat Phallon Tullis-Joyce, but it was only the beginning of a long night for the USWNT goalkeeper.
The hosts dominated possession with 60% of the ball, 10 total shots and constant pressure in midfield against an overwhelmed United team. Hinata Miyazawa and Olme struggled to assert control against the possession-based approach from Eder Maestre’s side, which featured Alexia Putellas tucking in alongside Alanna Kennedy, Geyoro and Danielle Van de Donk.
The Netherlands international would put the tie to bed in the second half with a goal from close range in the 82nd minute. It easily could have been more if not for some settling for shots and three saves by PTJ.
United did find a consolation goal in the last minute of stoppage time. Simi Awujo bagged her first league goal in a red shirt with a shot on the end of a corner kick. They cut the lead to 2-1, but the final whistle blew just seconds after the restart.
It will potentially be a difficult reset for Olid with a blunt admission from club leadership that there would not be many reinforcements in the summer window. The Reds did complete some exciting signings in Mexico captain Rebeca Bernal and Spain defender Andrea Medina, but the club largely focused on signing younger players to replace the exodus of first teamers going out.
It doesn’t get any easier. The Reds will face Chelsea next weekend, followed by Arsenal the next weekend.
