September has been kind to the Yankees, as they’ve won all but one of the series that they’ve played this month. They can add on their fifth such series win today to wrap up this road trip, and send themselves back to the Bronx with momentum on their heels in the still-active division race.
Cam Schlittler will be the man on the mound for this occasion, making one of his final cases for a potential playoff start. The rookie has showcased excellent swing-and-miss stuff when he’s on, striking out 26.7
percent of batters faced, but he’s faced two of his toughest challenges this month. The Blue Jays rocked him for four runs in less than two innings at the start of September, and after rebounding with a solid six innings against Detroit Schlittler was bogged down by free passes against Minnesota his last time out, issuing five walks in 4.2 innings en route to four runs scoring in a game that was supposed to be a laugher but almost got blown. It’s a game of adjustments and teams have started to get a look at Schlitter’s work and made a few, so it’ll be interesting to see how he responds with the potential for him to be slotted in as the third pitcher in a postseason rotation still up for grabs.
Opposite Schlittler will be Kyle Bradish, making his fifth start this year since returning from Tommy John surgery. He’s been electric since returning, posting a 2.45 ERA and not allowing more than two runs in any start while running an absurd 34.9 percent strikeout rate. The few bats that have made contact with Bradish’s pitches seem to do well, as his .304 BABIP indicates he’s getting just a bit lucky, but it’s hard to argue with the results that Bradish has collected after the long layaway. He throws a heavy mix of sinkers and sliders with a healthy mix of his four-seamer and curveball to keep hitters on their toes, and he’s done away with the changeup that he mostly had for show in his first two seasons in the big leagues.
The Yankees will slide Aaron Judge over to DH for the afternoon game, taking Giancarlo Stanton out of the lineup in favor of Jasson Domínguez in left field as Cody Bellinger slides over to right field. Austin Wells is back behind the plate and Ben Rice shifts over to first base, while José Caballero steps back in as the shortstop for Anthony Volpe.
