As Sunderland fans, there’s little better than watching someone grow into the shirt.
Brian Brobbey has already given us plenty to celebrate in his near-fifteen months on Wearside, and there are plenty of reasons to believe his story his just beginning.
Tuesday’s announcement that our number nine has signed a new long-term contract, keeping him at the club until 2031, is a huge statement. Brobbey has become crucial to how Sunderland play, and this news, despite coming with the club at a low point, could
act as both a catalyst to boost the fanbase and to inspire Brobbey to find his best form.
Since arriving from Ajax on deadline day in 2025, Brobbey has brought a physical presence that many defenders have struggled to deal with, dominating Gabriel, William Saliba, Ruben Dias and of course Dan Burn during his time on Wearside.
His first season saw him score seven Premier League goals as Sunderland exceeded expectations, securing Europa League football and announcing ourselves back in the Premier League — and there were plenty of memorable moments along the way.
The winner at St James’ Park won’t be forgotten in a hurry, while his goals against Arsenal, Tottenham, Everton, Crystal Palace, Bournemouth and that assist at Stamford Bridge helped turn Sunderland’s Premier League return into something unheard of in these parts.
If there was one afternoon that truly showed Brobbey’s potential, it was that hat-trick against Manchester City at the Etihad in September, with three goals against one of the strongest defences in the world, never mind the country.
Each goal demonstrated a poacher’s instinct — similarly to his goals for Netherlands in the World Cup, both of which came from low crosses across the six-yard box. If we can keep creating these types of chances, Brobbey will continue to score and lead us to more positive results in the Premier League and on the continent this season.
The Dutchman became the first Sunderland player to score a Premier League hat-trick since Jermain Defoe in 2016, and he also won the Premier League’s Player of the Matchweek award for his performance. This was a reminder that when it clicks and we create the chances, Brobbey can trouble any defence in the division.
For Sunderland, this deal protects a key asset, increasing our bargaining power if a team were to come in for Brobbey in the next few transfer windows, as well as maximising our income in a worst-case scenario come the end of the season, but we won’t mention the ‘R’ word today.
Brobbey also represents the type of player Sunderland are looking for and want to build around: ambitious, committed, physical and still developing.
The first chapter has been a good one; let’s hope the next can be even better. To describe Brobbey’s new deal in just one word, we’ll leave that to the man himself…
