The Los Angeles Chargers are boosting their wide receiver room going into Week 2 against the Las Vegas Raiders.
According to ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler, the Chargers are signing wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling to the practice squad.
The move comes after wide receiver Ladd McConkey suffered a rib injury in the team’s Week 1 loss
against the Arizona Cardinals. With McConkey potentially missing time, the team promoted Gary Jennings to the 53-man roster and have now moved Valdes-Scantling into his spot on the practice squad.
MVS brings a lot of experience to the Chargers organization after he was selected in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL draft out of South Florida. He spent the first four years of his career with the Packers before moving to the Kansas City Chiefs, where he won back-to-back Super Bowls in 2022 and 2023.
In the past two seasons, Valdes-Scantling has become a journeyman in the NFL, playing for the Buffalo Bills, New Orleans Saints, San Francisco 49ers, and Pittsburgh Steelers. Earlier in the offseason, Valdes-Scantling signed a one-year deal with the Dallas Cowboys, but he was cut at the end of training camp, ahead of the 53-man roster deadline.
It remains to be seen if MVS will ever see the field for the Chargers, but the team is at least giving him a shot to prove himself in practice.
