The Philip Montgomery era begins at Virginia Tech (0-3) on Saturday as the Wofford Terriers come to Blacksburg with the Hokies looking for their first win.
After battling South Carolina tough for over three quarters in Week 1, it looked as if the Hokies might surprise this season. Things were even more interesting when Tech led a good Vanderbilt team 20-10 at halftime two weeks ago. Something apparently happened during that 15-minute halftime period that broke Virginia Tech.
The Hokies hosted Old Dominion
last week and trailed 31-0 at one point. That game cost head coach Brent Pry his job. While we don’t want to say the Hokies hit rock bottom, it’s fair to ask how much worse can it get? Pry entered the season on shaky ground, and the collapse against Vanderbilt warmed up his seat further. Last week proved to be the final straw.
Pry’s dismissal meant the NCAA transfer portal opened for 30 days. Cornerback Dante Lovett entered, and his Virginia Tech career is over. Expect other players to follow in the coming week, especially those with a redshirt season at their disposal. The Hokies also lost a few recruits this week. That’s no surprise. Things are going to get better in Blacksburg, but it’s going to be ugly for a few months.
So, about the game? Wofford isn’t good. The Terriers are 0-3 and did not score an offensive touchdown in their first two games before losing 22-21 to Mercer last week. This may be the Hokies’ last best chance to get a win.
