Daniel Cormier envisions a world where he and Jon Jones meet one more time, but this time it’s on the wrestling mats.
Cormier and Jones have one of the most storied rivalries in MMA history. For years, the two exchanged insults and heated words in the media, and twice fought each other in the UFC, with Jones winning both bouts, though the second was overturned to a no-contest after Jones tested positive for a banned substance. And now, Cormier is hoping for some get back in the near future.
On Monday,
Cormier told fellow Olympian Ben Askren that he believes he and Jones will face off in the new wrestling league, Real American Freestyle, in the near future.
“I’m telling you, Real American Freestyle is going to see me and Jon Jones at some point, and I’m going to kick his ass like you would never believe,” Cormier said. “Because guess what, I still shoot. I still train wrestlers every single day.”
The rivalry between Cormier and Jones dates back to before either were household names.
The two first met at UFC 121, before Jones was light heavyweight champion or Cormier was even in the UFC, and Jones joked with Cormier that he could take the two-time Olympic wrestler down. That did not sit well with the Cormier, kicking off a decade of back-and-forth between the two.
Such is the enduring legacy of their rivalry that Jones and Cormier are set to coach opposite each other on the ALF MMA reality TV show later this year.
