Coming off a frustrating pair of five-set losses the day prior, Missouri volleyball desperately needed a bounce-back win. With a rescheduled date against No. 1 Nebraska looming ahead, Dawn Sullivan’s squad showed up and showed out, holding off the Falcons in four sets (25-16, 24-26, 25-20, 25-23).
Led by freshmen Lydia Stahley (11 kills) and Eva Smith (nine kills), Mizzou generated clutch late-set scoring runs to seal the match. The victory marked the Tigers’ sole win of the Bowling Green/Toledo Invitational.
Mizzou Takes Early Dominance
For the first time all weekend, Mizzou set the tone early by jumping out to a quick opening-set victory.
Paige Felder got the offense rolling, followed by early kills from Grace O’Reilly and Kimani Johnson to stake Mizzou to a 5-1 lead. Bowling Green struggled with consistency behind the service line, giving away points that allowed the Tigers to stay comfortably ahead.
Midway through the set, Sierra Dudley put on a serving showcase, dropping multiple aces alongside kills from Lauren Larkin and Maizy Agnello to blow the frame open at 14-6. Ainoah Cruz anchored the back row with sharp court coverage, allowing Smith and Larkin to assert themselves at the net down the stretch. Agnello capped off a dominant set with a crisp service ace to claim frame one.
Falcons Fight Back in Extra Points
Bowling Green brought vastly improved net discipline into set two, capitalizing on early Mizzou attack errors to jump out to a 10-4 advantage.
Looking for a spark, Sullivan brought Lydia Stahley into the rotation, a move that immediately paid off. Stahley quickly came in with a kill, starting a rally that featured swings from Johnson to bring Mizzou back within strike distance at 15-11.
Trailing 20-16 late, the Tigers mounted a tough comeback. Key attack errors from the Falcons, paired with consecutive kills from Stahley, leveled the frame at 22-22. Mizzou even earned set point at 24-22 following another Falcon error, but Bowling Green refused to go down. The Falcons strung together four consecutive points, closing on back-to-back kills to shock the Tigers and snatch set two.
Stahley’s Serves Reclaim Control
Rather than letting the late set-two collapse their momentum, Mizzou responded early on. Kills from O’Reilly and Smith, paired with a Piper Batie service ace, powered Mizzou to an early 6-3 advantage.
Bowling Green briefly threatened to close the gap midway through the frame, but Stahley completely took over the match from the service line. The freshman attacker went on a scorching run, firing off three consecutive service aces to turn a tight 19-15 contest into a commanding 22-15 lead.
The Falcons managed to save four set points late in the frame during a brief Mizzou lapse, although a Falcons service error finally sealed the victory for the Tigers, putting Mizzou back on top 2-1.
Mizzou’s Clutch Execution Seals the Match
Set four proved to be a back-to-back battle, featuring 12 ties and multiple lead changes as both teams traded heavy blows.
Mizzou relied heavily on their front-row blocking, getting early rejections from Smith and sophomore Maca Lobaglio to stay neck-and-neck. The Falcons used aggressive serving to push ahead 18-15, but Stahley once again delivered in the clutch, pounding back-to-back kills to tie the score at 18-18.
With the set locked at 20-20, Mizzou made the critical final push. Smith terminated a clutch swing to put Mizzou up 22-20, while junior middle blocker Tia Phinezy stepped back to serve and delivered a massive service ace for a 23-20 lead.
The Falcons refused to quit, clawing back to tie the game at 23-23 off a Mizzou attack error. With the match on the line, Paige Felder stepped up with a monster roll shot kill to set up match point at 24-23. On the next rally, pressure at the net forced a final Falcon attack error, locking up the Tigers victory.

Stahley finished with a .409 hitting %, four service aces and a 15.0 total point performance off the bench. Smith had a stellar.438 hitting %, six total blocks, one service ace and 13.5 points. Ainoah Cruz claimed 22 digs, five assists and dominant back-row defense. Piper Batie & Sierra Dudley combined for 31 assists to orchestrate the offense.
Looking Ahead
With a vital win secured to avoid a winless weekend, the Tigers will immediately pivot to their toughest test of the season. A rescheduled road clash against top-ranked No. 1 Nebraska in Lincoln will set the tone Wednesday, at 6 p.m.
