And just like that, the two biggest free agent power bats are off the board. The Red Sox didn’t get Pete Alonso, and the Mets didn’t get Pete Alonso. Instead, he went further down I-95 to Baltimore for five years and $155 million.
Given the Red Sox need for more pop in the the lineup, their refusal to extend themselves for it on the free agent market is a big (even if not totally surprising at this point) deal. And, as Tim Healey noted last night, the Sox offer was for fewer years and significantly
less money, so they weren’t even close.
