UW Softball officially moved into their conference slate this past weekend, as they welcomed the Terrapins of Maryland to Husky Softball Stadium. Coming into the weekend, Maryland had accrued a modest 12-12 record, with a previous win over Delaware on March 10th. The Huskies of course, were on a hot streak, having won their last nine games after losing to Loyola Marymount back on February 22nd. They kept rolling this past weekend, picking up a sweep of the Terrapins!
In the first game, which happened
to be 90s Night, Maryland got off to a good start, thanks to an RBI double from their leading hitter, infielder Anna McGowa,n in the top of the first. However, these Dawgs didn’t stay down for long, as in the bottom of the second, Alexis Deboer displayed some ambush tactics, driving in Melody Acevedo and Sophi Mazzola with a single to right field on an 0-0 count. Deboer would come home on a 2 run shot by Giselle Alvarez, her 4th of the campaign, making the score 4-1 Dawgs, a lead that they would never relinquish, despite a solo shot from Terrapin Utility player Mariah Penta in the top of the third inning. Thanks to a 5 run 4th (which included a 2 run triple from Gabi Toney), the Huskies were on the precipice of victory, at 9-2. That’s when Jadyn Glab said “let’s go home!”, and did this in the bottom of the fifth:
Altogether, Glab drove in 4 runs as the Huskies won 12-2. The base runners were a little bit more subdued in the second game the next day, but the team was kept afloat by a fantastic performance from Morgan Reimer, who picked up her 13th win on the year, pitching a complete game, striking out 2 and only allowing 4 hits. Despite the 1-0 victory, the team still picked up 7 hits, with Kaycie Burdick going 3-3 and Jaydn Glab continuing her fantastic hitting stretch going 2-3. But it was Giselle Alvarez who provided the game’s only run, scoring Jing Gardner on a sacrifice fly. This win assured the Huskies’ second series win in Big Ten play, and pushed the winning streak to 11.
The series finale was played Sunday, and it was 2010s Day, a concept that immediately made me feel incredibly old! After a quiet first frame, the Terps got the scoring started in the second inning, with Zayda Rocke hitting a 2 run homer. The Huskies tied the game thanks to an RBI double from Ally Hetzel and an RBI single from Gabi Toney. An RBI single from Hetzel gave the Huskies a 3-2 lead and a 3 run homer from Ava Carroll broke the game wide open!
From there, it was all Dawgs, as the pitching of Ryan Maddox (relieving Sophia Ramuno in the top of the fourth) and the combined effort of the Dawg bats put the game out of reach of the Terrapins. Shout out to Annika Tycen, for getting an RBI single in her first AB of the year:
Thanks to that offense, the Huskies would complete the sweep, beating the Terps 8-2. Next up for the Dawgs, a quick home stop to play North Dakota on Wednesday before a weekend set in Ann Arbor as the Huskies travel to take on Michigan. That series should tell you a lot about who this team is, as they look to keep their momentum going in a hostile environment in conference play!
