The Spurs made a statement on Monday night, and the statement is that they’ve arrived as a contender as Wembanyama took over if the final minutes as the Spurs beat the Bulls in their home arena. Not every game this season has been perfect, but it would
be hard to beat those final few moments in the Windy City as the Silver and Black took the game away as time was running out.
Tonight, they face the Warriors in the first of two games against them this week in San Antonio. Golden State is coming off of a big loss to the Thunder last night and are 6-6 on the season. They are dependent on the aging superstar duo of Jimmy Butler and Stephen Curry, who can still play at a high level, but may want to pace themselves a bit in the regular season. Steve Kerr waved the white flag early in last night’s loss, and with but Curry and Butler sitting out most of the fourth quarter last night, they should be well-rested tonight against the high-flying Spurs. Draymond Green hasn’t played all that well so far this season, but he has a talent for getting under the skin of opponents, so it might be time to unveil San Antonio’s not-so-secret weapon, Jeremy Sochan, to counteract the Warriors’ chippiness with his own flavor of chippiness. Devin Vassell has to sit out the second half of the Bulls game with a migraine, and if he’s feeling better tonight, he could have a big game. De’Aaron Fox should be getting back into game shape and he’s due for a big outing tonight, as he shares point duties with Stephon Castle. Both teams will be back at it on Friday, with that one counting as part of the NBA Cup tournament. The Spurs can make a huge step forward as a contending team by playing well against the Warriors, and winning both games would be a huge confidence boost for the young Spurs squad.
Game Prediction:
In honor of Neil Young’s 80th birthday, Wembanyama will sing and play guitar for a rendition of Don’t Let it Bring You Down at halftime. He will also score 40 points and have 6 blocks and 3 steals.
