About the Dukes: Duquesne is also a private Catholic university located in Pennsylvania (Pittsburgh). They were picked by the coaches to finish ninth (out of 14 teams) in the Atlantic-10 Preseason Poll. They are led by second-year coach Dru Joyce III, who was the associate head coach under Keith
Dambrot prior to his retirement. The Dukes return two starters (and 10 players overall) from last year’s roster. Duquesne did not have anyone nominated for preseason honors. Through three games, they are led by 6’10” graduate forward John Hugley IV. Hugley IV, a transfer from conference-foe Xavier, is averaging 19.7 points and 9 rebounds per game thus far on 60% shooting. In his two games against Villanova last year, he played a total of 5 minutes and did not attempt a shot. Duquesne’s other leading scorer to this point is 6’2” senior guard Tarence Guinyard, a transfer from University of Tennessee at Martin. Guinyard is averaging 18 points, 3 rebounds and 6.3 assists per game on 51.7% shooting from the field and 33.3% from three-point range (6 attempts per game).
Notes on Nova: The Wildcats are coming off of a historic performance against Sacred Heart, having hit a program-record 22 threes. It may be tough to get anywhere near that against the Dukes, who have held their first three opponents to 18/76 from range thus far (23.7%). This would also be a great time to get Tafara Gapare back from his one-game absence due to a foot injury, as Duquesne starts two 6’10” players in Hugley IV and junior Jakub Necas (5.3 points and 3.3 rebounds per game).
