Amanda Nunes already had some big plans for her comeback, but now they include dropping down to 125 pounds and becoming the first three division champion in UFC history.
Nunes announced her intention to
leave retirement and fight current UFC women’s bantamweight champion Kayla Harrison back in April of 2025. When that could happen depends on when “The Lioness” re-entered the DFSI testing pool. Public records show her being tested twice this year so far, so the clock is ticking.
Just beating Kayla Harrison isn’t enough for Nunes, who wants to put a lock on her record as the women’s GOAT. With Valentina Shevchenko beating Zhang Weili at UFC 322, there’s some talk that perhaps “Bullet” could become the GOAT, despite Nunes holding two wins over her.
The easiest way to stop that ridiculous chatter? Nunes wants to beat Shevchenko for a third time … at flyweight.
“After I beat Kayla Harrison I’m going to go down to 125 and take this belt for collection too,”” Nunes wrote on Instagram.
That all sounds great, but talk is easy. Actually dropping an extra 10 pounds is not. Nunes has never competed at flyweight, and used to shut down talk of the idea, saying “Losing weight sucks.” But what doesn’t suck is the legacy that would come from being the first three-division UFC champion in history.
First Nunes will have to beat Olympic judo gold medalist Kayla Harrison, who knows more than a little about losing weight. That fight has no date yet, but we expect announcements to be made soon after the UFC kicks off its move to Paramount / CBS at the start of 2026.
