‘Broadway Baker’ — we all dreamed of it during the 2018 NFL Draft. When the New York Jets traded up to the No. 3 overall pick, the betting favorite to be the selection was Baker Mayfield.
However, some draft day surprises resulted in Mayfield being the No. 1 overall pick to the Cleveland Browns. The Jets ended up with Sam Darnold, and the rest is history.
Fast forward eight years later and Jets fans once again were thinking about a potential Mayfield-Jets pairing during the 2027 offseason. If the 2027 NFL
Draft didn’t pan out, it appeared Mayfield could be a backup plan in free agency for the Jets.
Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were engaged in an ugly contract squabble with no resolution in sight this offseason. However, both sides agreed to a new contract extension that keeps Baker in Tampa Bay through the 2029 season.
Alas, we must refocus our rooting interest on random college quarterbacks, hoping one of them can be the long-term guy next year.
