One does not want to keep mentioning Vincent Kompany’s collapse and Joshua Kimmich’s familial tragedy, aside from sending prayers to the duo and their families and hoping things improve as soon as possible. The truth is that these horrible incidents also affect those around them, including Bayern Munich’s staff and players. Yet, in the midst of a brutal footballing schedule, they have had to carry on as close to normal as possible.
Overcoming SC Freiburg away from home is always a difficult task;
doing so with 8 absences is even harder, and doing so after dealing with the trauma of recent tragedies is extraordinary. Bayern’s board member for sport, Max Eberl, certainly thinks so.
“I don’t think we really understand what we’ve achieved this week with all the hurdles we’ve had to overcome.” Eberl said (as captured by Bayern’s official website). “What the team and we as a group have done with the coaching staff is extraordinary. The win means three points, but it was a bigger win than just three points. Obviously we’ve got problems at the moment, but we have our squad and are really happy. The team played an almost perfect away game for over 80 minutes. The way we fought to avoid an equalizer at the end and then made it 3-1. It was a really great win today.”
