Nebraska 3, Michigan State 0 – 25-15, 25-18, 25-20
Nebraska walked into Breslin Arena tonight ready to get another sweep tonight and stay undefeated. While they still had some down moments, they kept fighting and never gave up when Michigan State pushed back at every lead the Huskers got.
I have to start out with a B1G+ rant because I’ve always thought B1G+ was kind of wonky and just not ran that well. Tonight’s stream kind of proved that as the mistakes started as soon as they started to show the lineups.
Bergen Reilly was playing opposite, Virginia Adriano was playing setter, and Teraya Sigler was playing DS according to B1G+. This was all completely wrong, but funny to see.
There were also scoreboard issues during breaks. During the 1st commercial break, it said 0-0 when it definitely wasn’t. Later in the set, it showed that they were in the 3rd set, won the 1st 2 sets, and were up 3-0 in the 3rd. Completely wrong once again.
By the 2nd set, they seemed to finally get these things fixed, but this kind of shows that B1G+ needs some better people in charge for games on this service.
DBK only had one change to the lineup tonight from her usual as Laney Choboy wore the Libero jersey tonight. I don’t know why this happened since Olivia Mauch has been playing good, but maybe she just wanted to try her out there again.
The Huskers shot out to a quick 10-3 lead to start the 1st set and it looked like they were going to run them out of the arena. Michigan State didn’t lay down though as they got back into the match and made the score 12-7.
The whole 1st set was just all about momentum. Nebraska had this 1st and got their lead. Michigan State came back within a few points and showed they wanted to make the night longer than Husker fans expected.
Nebraska had to fight to end the set as the Spartans kept fighting. That is their theme tonight as they never let up. Harper Murray led all hitters with 5 kills and Andi Jackson was perfect at 1.000% after the 1st.
Nebraska had an amazing 1st set hitting .636% for the set. Michigan State was held to .207%, but they still looked like a team that was just full of compete.
The Huskers started off strong, once again, in the 2nd set by scoring 5 unanswered points. Teraya Sigler had 2 of these points as she had 2 services aces on 3 serves.
The Spartans quickly fought back again making the score 7-5. They scored 7 unanswered points in that run. They almost tied the match, but after Nebraska challenged the play the point was given to the Huskers to go up 8-6.
Michigan State had yet another impressive run scoring 4 unanswered to come within 5 point at 20-5. Nebraska got their shit together at this point, but gave up a couple set points, to win the 2nd.
Taylor Landfair led all Husker hitters, after the 2nd, with 8 kills. Rebekah Allick has had a very good night hitting .571% after 2. The Huskers looked a little more shaky in this set only hitting .290% after their over .600% hitting run in the 1st.
The 3rd set followed the same trend as the other 2 as Michigan State never stopped fighting. They stated out going point for point this time though. The Spartans even scored first this time.
Nebraska started to take over the match a little bit, but Michigan State said not so fast, once again, and made Husker fans scared that they were going to have to balance football and volleyball for another set.
Freshman setter Campbell Flynn and Senior opposite Allie Sczech got playing time halfway through the 3rd with what looked like was another try at the double sub.
With another Michigan State push back, Nebraska still came back harder and got the set 3 win to sweep yet another match. The Spartans definitely competed with everything they had and their program is looking way better than it did a year ago today.
Harper Murray ended on top tonight with another stellar match of 13 kills, 0 errors, and hit .500%. Thank you Tate McRae!!
Taylor Landfair finished with 8 kills, Virginia Adriano with 7, and Rebekah Allick had 6 to round out the top players.
The Huskers ended up having a pretty good hitting match even though the 2nd and 3rd sets weren’t as strong. They ended at .383% while holding Michigan State to .209%.
Nebraska was part of another record setting night as the Spartans sold 11.578 tickets for the match tonight. The Huskers have been part of 19 record setting nights since 2023. This was also the 18th straight time the Huskers have beat the Spartans.
Nebraska will close out their Michigan trip on Sunday when they play Harper’s childhood team in the Michigan Wolverines. The match will begin at 1:00pm CT and be streamed on B1G+ again. Oh joy.
