Riding six straight victories, Aggie baseball welcomes Vanderbilt (18-12, 5-4 SEC) to Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park for an Easter weekend series in search of their first home conference series win.
No. 20 Texas A&M (23-5, 5-4) started the week with a 16-2 run-rule win over Sam Houston (14-14, 4-5 CUSA) to continue their winning streak. The Aggies used 17 hits from eight different players to arrive at a shortened victory. SEC Co-Player of the Week Gavin Grahovac continued his hot stretch with another
three-hit day and a homer, while Freshman of the Week Jorian Wilson added two RBI to his season total in the rout.
The weekend comes early for the Aggies with their first Thursday-Saturday series due to Easter Sunday being this week. No time to waste to take on a Vanderbilt squad who has a fresh dose of momentum.
The Commodores come to College Station on a five-game win streak of their own, having swept previously ranked Tennessee. Vanderbilt got the brooms out with three consecutive walk-off victories over their archrival, improving their conference record to 5-4. It was their second SEC series win, after winning their opening set against LSU and being swept on the road by a top-10 Mississippi State.
Saturday and Sunday’s tilts against the Volunteers went to extra innings, with Saturday’s contest setting a new program record for longest game by innings at 16 frames. Offensively, Vanderbilt is similar to previous A&M opponent Georgia, as home run hitting is their expertise. The Commodores have tallied 62 longballs this season, only second to the Bulldogs.
Keeping the ball in the yard will be crucial for both pitching staffs, as A&M is coming off an 11-home run output from last weekend’s series against Missouri.
For the Aggies, this series is the conclusion of an eight-game stretch against opponents lower in the Rating Percentage Index (RPI), a metric used for NCAA Tournament selection. Houston Christian, Missouri, Sam Houston, and Vanderbilt all sit in the low-to-mid-100s range of that ranking metric, while Texas State, Texas, Houston, LSU, UTSA, Florida, Tarleton, and Auburn all await over the next month of action.
Since the calendar has flipped to April, the only thing A&M needs to bring over from March is their stellar runner-in-scoring-position (RISP) average. Going 69-for-102 (.342) over 18 games in the month won them 14 games. Accomplish that high RISP average again, and the path back to the Tournament gets even clearer for the Maroon and White.
While a sweep will be tough against a motivated, riding-high Vanderbilt, getting a series victory at home against a conference opponent is a must. Playing the Commodores always seems to be an inflection point in each season for Aggie baseball. Two years ago, a sweep of the team from Tennessee propelled the squad to a dominant finish in SEC play. Time to see if the 30th, 31st and 32nd meetings all time between programs will allow A&M to have history repeat itself and create momentum going into the back half of the 2026 campaign.rk+ to close out the March portion of the conference slate.
