After the conclusion of the NFL draft, where quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis was the only former Scarlet Knight to have his name called, several other former Rutgers football players signed undrafted free agent deals with NFL teams. These include tight end Kenny Fletcher Jr, EDGE Eric O’Neill, cornerback Cam Miller, and wide receiver DT Sheffield. All but Fletcher signed with Rutgers for their last season of eligibility in 2025.
Sheffield signed with Rutgers for the 2025 season after playing the 2024
season at North Texas. In 2025, Sheffield caught 44 passes for 577 yards and five touchdowns. He was seen as a reliable third pass catcher after Ian Strong and KJ Duff. He inked a UDFA deal with the New York Jets.
O’Neill and Miller were seen as two of the few bright spots on an otherwise horrific Rutgers defense last season. O’Neill, who transferred to Rutgers from James Madison, recorded 37 total tackles, 2.5 sacks and 1 pass defended last season, while Miller, who transferred to Rutgers from Penn State, recorded 47 tackles, 6 pass breakups, 1 sack, and 1 interception. Miller came to a deal with the Carolina Panthers, while O’Neill did the same with the Detroit Lions.
Fletcher originally committed to Rutgers as a defensive end out of Delran High School in NJ. After seeing limited minutes as a defensive end during his first two seasons, Fletcher flipped to the other side of the ball to become a tight end in 2024. Despite dealing with injuries, Fletcher started 6 games that year and recorded 20 catches for 137 yards and two touchdowns. He posted similar numbers in his senior year, recording 26 catches for 236 yards. He signed his UDFA deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
