We are days away from World Cup 2026, and the biggest tournament in the sport will introduce some big changes to the rules and to VAR’s capabilities.
Several adjustments have been made to try and curb time-wasting such as strict time limits for goal-kicks, throw-ins and substitutions and the elimination of tactical timeouts for injured goalkeepers. There are also big changes to the jobs of VAR officials, who are now able to change incorrect corner-kicks before the set piece is taken, review second
yellow cards and alert on-field officials about offsides in real-time with improved semi-automated offside technology.
These rules will remain in place after the World Cup for every club competition, so we all must get familiarized with the new changes that will impact the way games are officiated starting next week in North America.
