In January of 2025, Bayern Munich’s talented youngster Felipe Chávez was shockingly left out of Peru’s squad for the U-20 South American U-20 Championship despite having previously worked his way into the team. This angered a lot of fans and prompted Felipe’s agent (and brother) Fabián Chávez to release a disgruntled statement. Still, the younger Chávez put his head down and focused on making the step up to Bayern’s U-23s, not only succeeding in the step but taking on a starring role for the Bavarians’
reserve team.
That development seemingly did not escape the Peruvian football federations’ attention (this time). So, even before his debut for the Bayern first team in the 2-1 win over Grasshoppers Zürich, Paul Pérez Rioja reports, as captured by @iMiaSanMia, that Chávez got a phone call:
Felipe Chávez has been contacted by the Peruvian football federation (FPF) in order to include him in their national team setup, initially for the U20s. The feeling is positive. The 18-year old was born in Bavaria and is eligible for Germany and Peru.
Germany born and raised Chávez was called up to Germany’s U-15s in 2022 but switched to Peru’s U-17s in 2023 and working his way into the U-20s side. It would not be a surprise if Chávez were to choose Peru over Germany as his permanent international allegiance.
