Bayern Munich was not able to return from Norway with three valuable points when they faced Viking FK. The German side had an extremely difficult evening, conceding a goal just a couple minutes into the game, and allowing the Norwegians to manage a last minute equalizer.
Aside of a lack of collective cohesion and established players having subpar performances, a contributing factor for Bayern’s eventual failure was the sending off of star winger Michael Olise in the 74th minute, after earning a couple
of yellow cards in a matter of seconds. Olise’s being sent off, as well as the team’s mediocre performance did not sit well with board member for sport Max Eberl, who did not mince his words in a post-game interview for AZ München (as captured by Yahoo Sports). “That [performance] is currently not the level of our team […] We have plenty of scoring opportunities, we will score lots of goals. But we are overloading our backpack,” declared Eberl.
Furthermore, the sports chief took a shot at Frenchman Olise. “We get ourselves into trouble right from the start and then into a numerical disadvantage with a stupid yellow-red card.” Eberl also admitted that the red card was well-deserved, while stating that Olise did not manage the situation correctly. “It was a yellow-red card. Yellow for holding and the second yellow for the ball to the face. We let ourselves get provoked.”
When asked if Olise would receive a fine, Eberl tried not to give anything away, stating that they will “sort it out calmly.”
