It’s another season and another slow start for Marvin Mims Jr. in the Denver Broncos offense. The strange usage early on in seasons seems to be a recurring theme and something head coach Sean Payton mentions about this time every year of getting more touches to Mims. He did so again on Monday.
“We’re trying to get him touches,” Payton said of adding Mims to kickoff duties. “He’s one of our explosive playmakers. Quite honestly, we need to get him more touches on offense, and we’ll do that. A lot of it had
to do with the way they were kicking off. We kind of, you noticed, went more to a single returner and certainly that first one (return) that puts us at midfield was a big one for us.”
Before Sunday, Mims had a grand total of 29 yards receiving and 24 yards in kickoff yardage. Against the Arizona Cardinals he had 53 yards receiving and 103 yards in kickoff return yardage. However Payton needs to do it, I would agree that getting Mims more involved in everywhere they can is a smart plan.
Hopefully we see his involvement increase through the next two games as Denver winning both would have them sitting quite pretty atop the AFC West.

Broncos Stock Up, Stock Down: Week 7 vs. Cardinals
The Broncos, and specifically quarterback Bo Nix, needed a game like this. After a week and a half of dealing with the fallout from Ryan Fitzpatrick’s rant, the media piling on, Sean Payton being asked if Nix should be benched, and so on, Nix and the Broncos responded in a big way.

Potent quotables
Sean Payton
On what he saw from RB Jonah Coleman yesterday and wanting to get him more touches
“He played well. The touches he had were explosive. Like anything else, I think it’s something you earn. He’s done a good job of that.”
On how much of the team’s recent success can be attributed to the special teams unit
“I think the quickest way to improve your team is in the kicking game and then in your defensive and offensive fronts. If you talk about taking care of the football and playing well on special teams, you’re going to give yourself a chance. I think [Special Teams Coordinator/Assistant Head Coach] Darren [Rizzi] and his group have done a real good job.”
On the Broncos-Chiefs series and the importance of divisional games
“I’ve said this a hundred times, but divisional games are always important and they typically kind of move. I don’t see rivalry weeks in the NFL. They’re generally divisional games where you have an important game against a division opponent. So I don’t see the Auburn-Alabama. I don’t see the Ohio State-Michigan. That’s just from being in this league long enough and doing it long enough.”
On discussing the reverse play in his postgame press conference
“I think I was at that point where I was answering maybe one or two questions too many that weren’t important. I was kind of surprised no one had gotten to that call. That was really it.”
On OLB Que Robinson’s pressure rate
“I like it. I feel like we would definitely say we’ve seen this arrow up with his play and confidence. I think it’s a real good observation. I’m really encouraged with the snap counts and then the production you see when he’s playing. I think all of what you’re seeing is what we’re seeing.”
