If your Georgia Bulldogs are opening the college football season with a raft of questions still unanswered about themselves and their opponent, you could probably use a drink. I can help you with that.
As GlimmerTwinDawg noted this morning, we really don’t know a whole heck of a lot about the Marshall Thundering Herd. New head coach Tony Gibson took over a team decimated by transfers when the prior regime decamped for Southern Miss. We don’t actually officially even know who the starting quarterback
is (though we expect it’s Syracuse transfer for Carlos del Rio-Wilson).
I think it’s safe to say that things may be a little messy in Huntington in the early going, which is a blessing or a curse for the Red and Black depending on your perspective. On the one hand, it would be beneficial to open with an opponent who executes well, forces the ‘Dawgs to make some adjustments on the fly, and generally gives the team some good looks before the SEC season arrives in two weeks. On the other hand, I have attended more than one Bulldog home opener against an opponent who did not go down as easy as the schedulers probably anticipated. There’s a fine line between “that was a useful tune up” and “it’s only truly a disaster if you don’t survive it.”
What I want out of the Thundering Herd then is for them to give the Athenians some good looks but ultimately to make enough mistakes that this one isn’t particularly close for very long. Is that too much to ask? Perhaps.
And what do I want out of the defending SEC Champions? Well one thing that would be very nice is to see them make Marshall pay for mistakes. Really good football teams often present themselves by being more efficient and less mistake-prone than their opponents earlier in the season. If this Bulldog team can win the turnover battle and maybe crate some points off those turnovers, perhaps even score a special teams touchdown, I will be very excited. Because those are the things championship football teams have a knack for.
And what’s the drink for the game in which you want the Thundering Herd to have some blunders and for the Bulldogs to capitalize on those quickly and efficiently?
A Blundering Herd. It’s among the simplest preparations we’ve ever recommended in these digital pages. You start with a double pour of Buffalo Trace straight bourbon whiskey, neat. That’s also where you end up. That’s it, that’s the recipe. A generous pour of a quality Kentucky bourbon with a picture of an American bison on the bottle into a glass that fits your hand just right, enjoyed slowly while the Georgia Bulldogs build a 28-0 lead. That’s what ae’re going for here. It’s the K.I.S.S. Method: Keep it simple, Smart.
