Germany defender Jonathan Tah has publicly jumped to the defense of international teammate Florian Wirtz, hitting back at the harsh criticism directed at the playmaker across British sports media.
Wirtz has been under intense scrutiny in England recently following a string of matches for Liverpool where pundits questioned his impact and overall adjustment to Premier League football. Speaking from Germany’s national team camp ahead of their UEFA Nations League fixtures, as captured by @iMiaSanMia,
Tah made it clear that he believes the reaction in England has been vastly overblown.
“I’m happy he’s with us here for a few days. Of course I’m aware of how people are talking about him, but I can’t quite understand it. I know what kind of player he is. I know he’ll perform even better and shine even brighter. But I find it a bit extreme how he’s being attacked right now. He should just keep going. I watch every Liverpool game where Flo plays, he’s not playing bad games – sometimes the last moment is missing to score a goal or play a decisive pass. But that will come,” Tah said.
Germany as a whole was underwhelming in their first appearance with Jürgen Klopp at the helm, and fans are yet to see Klopp’s second squad at play.
