Yesterday, when discussing Crysencio Summerville’s potential move to Roma, we jokingly compared it to a soap opera. Little did we know that As the Summerville Turns would become a real-life melodrama full of intrigue, backstabbing, and grand romantic (read: financial) gestures. When the credits rolled on yesterday’s episode, our protagonist had spurned Roma’s advances, falling head over heels for Al-Hilal, who lured the young Dutchman to the Arabian Peninsula with a jaw-dropping offer in the €16
to €20 million per season range.
It’s an about-face Roma fans have grown accustomed to over the years, but Summerville has reportedly given Roa a glimmer of hope. According to Marca’s Matteo Moretto, the 24-year-old winger remains open to joining the Giallorossi and has not yet officially accepted Al-Hilal’s mega offer. Taking it a step further, Gian Piero Gasperini reportedly spoke to Summerville last night to sell him on the merits of the Eternal City.
Despite Summerville’s waffling, there are still a few roadblocks Roma must clear before sealing this deal, namely reaching an agreement with West Ham. Yesterday’s updates suggested the two clubs were putting the finishing touches on a deal just shy of €50 million. Would the threat of Al-Hilal force Roma to improve that offer, or would a firm assent from Summerville be enough to complete the deal as currently structured?
Ultimately, it’s Summerville’s decision, but there is an opportunity cost for Roma. The longer they wait, the fewer options they’ll have in the transfer market.
