The college football season began in full over the long Labor Day weekend. For us North Carolina fans, well, things could’ve gone better. Bill Belichick’s debut as UNC coach ended in a blowout loss to TCU after all the hoopla both this week and over the months since his hiring. Obviously, one game is only one game and there’s time for Belichick and the team to turn things around, but it’s understandable if you’re feeling a little pessimistic at the moment.
However elsewhere around the country, it
was a pretty fun weekend to just watch college football. There were a couple top ten matchups that mostly lived up to the hype. Plus, we had some upsets, including a very notable one down in Tallahassee. With week one now completely in the books, let’s take a look at where things landed with the newest AP Top 25 poll.
AP Top 25 After Week One
- Ohio State (55 first place votes)
- Penn State (7)

Where is UNC?
Haha, yeah no. Considering the hype around the Belichick hire, if UNC had beaten TCU, they very well might’ve vaulted right into the top 25. Instead, the Horned Frogs crushed the Heels, so Carolina is absolutely nowhere close to being ranked as of now.
Biggest Winners
There were some — at least going by betting lines — unexpected winners in some of the biggest clashes in week one, and that led to some swings in the rankings. Ohio State took over the #1 spot after beating then #1 Texas. LSU went up to #3 and got first place votes after beating Clemson. However, the biggest jump belongs to Florida State, who went from unranked to #14 after taking down Alabama.
Biggest Losers
Alabama fell 13 spots to #21 on the flipside of that FSU win. However, we had two teams completely drop out of the rankings. One is Boise state, but Kansas State had probably the biggest drop, going from #17 to the unofficial #36 after their week zero defeat to Iowa State.
