Lamine Yamal says it’s a “good thing” that Barcelona are obsessed with winning the Champions League and believes it would be “very cowardly of us” not to be aiming for European glory with Hansi Flick.
Barcelona haven’t tasted success in the competition since 2015 but have reached the semi-finals and the quarter-finals under their German coach.
The Champions League is once again a top priority in 2026-27 season, and Yamal says he has absolutely no problem with that.
“I like that people come to the dressing
room and believe that we can win the Champions League,” he told Movistar.
“I think the problem would be if someone said that we are going to win it no matter what, because you will never know this. But being obsessed with winning it I think is a good thing in the end.
“We are Barça and Barça have had moments of being the best team in history and have won the Champions League. We have the team to do it and it would be a bit cowardly of us not to think: ‘this year we are going for the Champions League’ and say ‘we are only going for the League.’”
Yet Yamal hasn’t forgotten about winning La Liga and is eyeing a hat-trick of titles under Hansi Flick.
“In fact, we are going for the League, we can win the League and the Champions League, we have to be a team that can stick together during those bad 20 minutes,” he said pointing out how certain moments in games can be crucial to a team’s hopes of success.
