In the least surprising news since the college basketball season ended for the Virginia Tech Hokies earlier this month, freshman guard Neoklis Avdalas will enter the NCAA transfer portal, per his agent.
One of the most hyped players to ever come to Blacksburg, the 6-foot-9 native of Kalamata, Greece, finished his Virginia Tech career averaging 12.1 points, 4.6 assists and 3.1 rebounds per game. Avdalas shot 38.6% from the field and 35% from 3-point range. There was no higher moment for the Hokies
than a 107-101 overtime win over Providence in November, when Neo scored 33 points on 13 of 23, including 5 of 8 from beyond the arc.
Avdalas did score 30 in a December win over Western Carolina, but things changed once ACC play began on New Year’s Eve. In ACC opener against Virginia, Avdalas scored 17 points, but shot just 5 of 21 from the field. Avdalas had two games in which he scored just 2 points and one game in which he scored 5 points. When Virginia Tech’s season was on the line in the first round of the ACC Tournament, Avdalas sat for the final 7 minutes of regulation and in overtime. He scored just 5 points in 31 minutes of play.
The expectation was that Avdalas would play one year in Blacksburg and enter the 2026 NBA Draft. However, ACC play exposed his struggles against tougher, more athletic competition. While Avdalas could still explore draft opportunities, it’s clear his priority will shift to transferring, with the hopes of improving his draft stock.
