Triple-A: Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (Marlins) 7, Norfolk Tides 1 – F/11
It was a brutal day for the Norfolk offense. They did walk six times, but they also only had three hits, struck out 17 times, and went 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position. The only run they did manage to scratch across came in the bottom of the 11th inning. It was the “ghost runner” that automatically began the inning at second base. That run came in thanks to two wild pitches. Jackson Holliday went 1-for-3 with a walk, a strikeout, and a stolen base. Enrique Bradfield Jr. took an 0-for-3 with a walk and two strikeouts.
The performances were much better on the pitching side of things. The Tides tossed 10 scoreless innings to open the game. That included 4.2 shutout innings from Dean Kremer, who remains on standby until the Orioles need him at the big league level. The rehabbing Andrew Kittredge tossed one perfect inning and struck out two. Alex Pham ran into trouble and took the loss. He worked a shutout 10th inning, but got hit around in the 11th, allowing six runs (five earned).
Double-A: Erie SeaWolves (Tigers) 13, Chesapeake Baysox 8
The Chesapeake offense came out of the gate swinging, scoring seven runs in the first two innings, and getting the Erie starter yanked from the game. But they slowed down from there, plating just one more run over the final seven frames. Anderson De Los Santos led the lineup with a 3-for-3 line that included a double, a home run, a stolen base, two runs scored, and three RBI. Griff O’Ferrall smacked his first home run of the season. Douglas Hodo had two hits, including a triple and a stolen base.
Most of the Baysox pitchers had bad days at the office. Trace Bright coughed up four runs across his four innings of work. Eric Torres was charged with three runs in his lone frame of work. Tyson Neighbors was handed the loss even though he was the only Baysox arm that did not give up an earned run, although he was on the mound when a catcher interference led to a SeaWolves run in the sixth. Christian Herberholz allowed four runs and only recorded two outs. Jean Henriquez gave the best performance of the day, striking out four over 2.1 innings.
High-A: Winston-Salem Dash (White Sox) 5, Frederick Keys 4
Nate George had another strong showing at the top of the Frederick lineup. The centerfielder went 2-for-5. Vance Honeycutt had their lone extra-base hit, his first double of the season. Ike Irish and Wehiwa Aloy combined to go 0-for-7 with two walks and two runs scored. Victor Figueroa and Ryan Stafford each stole a base.
Frederick’s pitching staff had the best day of any Orioles affiliate, although they still had some struggles. Yeiber Cartaya was only charged with one earned run over his 3.2 opening innings. But he also uncorked a wild pitch, walked two in the first inning, and saw his third baseman Leandro Arias commit a two-run error that would have ended the inning if fielded cleanly. Ben Vespi followed with 1.1 shutout innings. Sayer Diederich took the loss, giving up two runs across 1.1 frames. Joe Glassey was a standout, striking out four over 1.1 shutout innings.
Low-A: Augusta GreenJackets (Braves) 11, Delmarva Shorebirds 1
We saved the worst for last. It was pretty much all bad news for the Shorebirds on Wednesday night. The starting pitcher, Keeler Morfe, had as rough of a showing as you can imagine. In his season debut, he failed to record an out while also allowing four runs on two hits and three walks. Braeden Sloan settled things a bit, striking out five over his two innings of work. But the game would get blown open in the middle innings. Kailen Hamson coughed up four runs in his 2.2 innings. And then Adrian Heredia was charged with three more runs (two earned) in the 3.2 innings that followed. At least Luis Beltrán was able to record the final two outs without allowing any more runs.
Delmarva had some traffic on the bases. They collected eight hits, worked a walk, and got some help from an Augusta error. But they went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position and also struck out 13 times. Cobb Hightower had two hits out of the leadoff spot. Juan Ortega’s triple was the team’s only extra-base hit. D.J. Layton added a pair of singles, a stolen base, and the team’s only run. Layton’s speed led to an error on his stolen base that then allowed him to score on a wild pitch.
