Pete Alonso has agreed to terms with the Baltimore Orioles, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan on Tuesday afternoon. The deal is reportedly worth five years and $155 million.
Alonso was drafted by the Mets
in the second round in 2016. In just seven seasons at the major league level, the Polar Bear placed himself among the pantheon of Mets greats, earning five All-Star selections, a Silver Slugger Award, a Rookie of the Year Award, a pair of Home Run Derby victories, and breaking Darryl Strawberry’s long-standing franchise home run record of 252. Since his debut, Alonso leads MLB by a wide margin with 712 RBI — a mark which ranks third in Mets history behind David Wright and Strawberry.
For the Orioles, who are in hopes of a bounce-back season after dropping from 91 wins in 2024 to 75 wins in 2025, Alonso’s right-handed power bat will complement the team’s left-handed core of Gunnar Henderson, Jackson Holliday, and Adley Rutschman. For the Mets, the leading internal candidate to take Alonso’s first base job is Mark Vientos, who will turn 26 tomorrow. President of Baseball Operations David Stearns also alluded to the possibility of using Jeff McNeil at first base next season.
The news of Alonso’s contract comes a day after Edwin Díaz reportedly agreed to terms with the Dodgers, and two and a half weeks since Brandon Nimmo was traded to the Texas Rangers for Marcus Semien. The Mets will enter 2026 without three of their four longest-tenured players, leaving McNeil as the only remaining member of the roster to have played in orange and blue in the 2010s.
