Newcastle United’s rebuild under Matthias Jaissle could extend well beyond the players, with the Magpies reportedly pursuing one of Borussia Dortmund’s most influential figures in recruitment.
talkSPORT reported that Newcastle and Tottenham are among a group of Premier League clubs interested in BVB chief scout Sebastian Krug, who could leave the Bundesliga club after a decade of service as several European teams pursue him.
“Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur are interested in Borussia Dortmund
scout Sebastian Krug, talkSPORT understands,” the outlet reported. “Krug, who is seen as playing a key role in Dortmund signing Erling Haaland and Jude Bellingham, is wanted by other European clubs.”
Krug, 43, has worked exclusively for Dortmund and became chief scout in 2022. His track record also includes involvement in identifying Jadon Sancho and Jamie Gittens, while he reportedly identified both Jude and Jobe Bellingham early and developed a strong relationship with their family.
“The feeling with Krug is he’s reached the end of his time at Dortmund after ten years of service,” talkSPORT reported.
Sky Sports similarly reported that Dortmund faces the possibility of losing Krug amid widespread European interest, while Ben Jacobs specifically identifies Newcastle and Tottenham as his Premier League suitors.
“A number of clubs in the Premier League and Europe are exploring a deal to recruit Borussia Dortmund director of scouting and recruiting Sebastian Krug,” Sky Sports reported. “Krug’s central role in Dortmund’s talent identification model has significantly enhanced his reputation within Premier League circles.
“After almost a decade at Dortmund, there is a growing sense that the time may now be approaching for Krug to take the next step in his career. It is understood that his next move is most likely to take him abroad – and potentially to the Premier League.”
A move for Krug would come amid significant changes to Newcastle’s recruitment structure. Long-serving chief scout Steve Nickson — who played a role in identifying several major Newcastle signings, including Alexander Isak, Sven Botman and Joelinton. — is expected to leave St. James’ Park following the transfer window to become Wrexham’s director of football.
Newcastle has already shifted its transfer strategy under sporting director Ross Wilson, increasingly targeting younger European talent in trying to replicate Borussia Dortmund’s model. Was that the biggest of hints at the Magpies’ interest in landing Krug?
