After a breakout season in which he established himself as not only a big leaguer, but also a potential franchise catcher and an All-Star, one more honor lies in store for Hunter Goodman.
Goodman was named a finalist for the National League Silver Slugger Award among catchers for the 2025 season. The other finalists are William Contreras of the Milwaukee Brewers and Will Smith of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Goodman, 26, played sporadically through his first two seasons. In
2023 he appeared in just 20 games—either as a first baseman, right fielder, or designated hitter—while hitting four doubles, three triples, and a home run in 70 at-bats. The following year he got more playing time—with a smattering of catching sprinkled in—and showcased his power potential with 13 home runs in 70 games.
2025 was a true breakout year for Goodman. He usurped the starting catcher role from Jacob Stallings during spring training and never gave it back. In 144 games, appearing exclusively as a catcher or designated hitter, Goodman hit .278/.323/.520 with 28 doubles, five triples, 31 home runs, and 91 RBIs.
Goodman led all National League catchers in triples, home runs, RBIs, batting average, and slugging percentage while representing the Colorado Rockies as their lone All-Star. Goodman is also the only Rockies player still with the team to be nominated for post-season hardware. Ryan McMahon—traded to the New York Yankees at the deadline—is a finalist for the Gold Glove Award among National League third baseman.
Renee Dechert made a case for Goodman to win the award last week, and while the Dodgers’ Will Smith is the likely favorite, Goodman walking away from the season with one more accolade would certainly be a welcome positive outcome after a difficult Rockies season.
