For the first time in the 2025 MLB Postseason, the league series have been split up. Today will feature the American League and tomorrow will feature the National League.
Yesterday, the Toronto Blue Jays
blew out the New York Yankees 10-1. The Jays got out to a 2-0 start with a solo homer by Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the first and another by Alejandro Kirk in the second, but the real damage came in the seventh and eighth innings. Andrés Giménez singled to score Daulton Varsho, and then Nathan Lukes doubled to score Giménez and Ernie Clement. Guerrero then hit a sacrifice fly to center to score George Springer and make the score 6-1.
In the eighth, Kirk hit another home run to kick things off. Then, Giménez doubled to score Varsho; Clement hit a sac fly to score Myles Straw; and Lukes singled to score Giménez to make the final score 10-1.
The other game featuring the Seattle Mariners and Detroit Tigers was equally as thrilling, but in a different way. The final score was 3-2 after 11 innings, due to some questionable calls.
Julio Rodríguez got things started with a solo homer in the fourth — the first playoff runs in Seattle since October 18, 2001 — but Kerry Carpenter struck back with a two-run shot in the fifth. J-Rod then hit a single to score Randy Arozarena in the sixth to tie things up. The dagger came from Zach McKinstry in the 11th when he singled to score Spencer Torkelson and end the game.
This afternoon, the Yankees and Mariners will look to bounce back, as teams who win Game 1 in any best-of-five series have gone on to win 72.4% of the time.
