It’s draft week, which means the rumor mill will be kicking into high gear for Thursday night’s event in Pittsburgh. The Washington Commanders currently hold six picks, with No. 7 starting off their draft night(barring any trades up or down). There has been a lot of speculation on who Adam Peters will probably won’t draft, and whether he’ll be able to pull off a trade down in a “weak” draft class.
Here are a few of the latest draft rumors involving the Commanders and pick #7. Most people are linking
Washington to Notre Dame RB Jeremiyah Love and say they are his floor for getting drafted. He could be the first RB to get drafted in the Top 5 since Saquon Barkley, and take that option off the table for Peters. Adam Schefter threw in a little nugget about Washington’s desire to improve the RB room, saying they would have pursued Aaron Jones Sr. last offseason if he didn’t re-sign with the Vikings.
Washington is also reportedly high on two of the three top Ohio State players, but would likely pass on safety Caleb Downs who has been heavily mocked to them. The Commanders are rumored to be the floor for LB Sonny Styles, and he’s Dan Quinn’s guy according to Todd McShay. Carnell Tate is their top wide receiver, over Jordyn Tyson and Makai Lemon per McShay.
Commanders want to improve RB room; High on Love
Even if Love does not wind up going No. 3, he will not slide far. The Commanders at No. 7 would seem to be his floor. Last spring, the Commanders planned to pursue Aaron Jones Sr. before he returned to the Vikings. This offseason, Washington added Rachaad White and Jerome Ford to join Jacory Croskey-Merritt, but the team still does not have much money invested in the position. If the opportunity presents itself, some expect the Commanders would rush to turn in the card for Love, giving Washington a great offensive tandem with him and Jayden Daniels.
#7 is the floor for Love, Styles; Tate is #1 WR on their board
“If Sonny Styles is sitting there for the Washington Commanders, I’m told on pretty damn good authority that Dan Quinn, that’s his guy … Styles is going seven to Washington if he’s on the board. And I actually believe that’s if Jeremiyah Love were on the board too. That’s what I’m hearing strong.”
Washington wants to trade down in the first round
Pass rusher, WR, CB, or Love at #7; Would pass on Downs
The Washington Commanders presently hold the seventh pick in the draft, and there’s speculation on who they could choose with that selection. People close to the organization tell me a pass rusher, wide receiver, and cornerback are in play at No. 7. Most believe the team will not take Caleb Downs if the Ohio State safety is available to them.
The team signed Nick Cross in free agency and still believes in Jartavius Martin despite a disappointing 2025 season. Those inside the building feel Martin’s upside is incredible and believe he can right the ship.
Several people tell me the team will jump all over Jeremiyah Love if he falls into their laps, with the direct quote being, “The team loves Love.” He’d be an additional weapon for Jayden Daniels, who’s coming off an injury-plagued season, and would end Washington’s running-back-by-committee approach. He has the potential to upgrade the offense instantly, but the Commanders can only get him if he makes it out of the top five.
