After spending more than a decade at FC Köln, Jonas Urbig knew that moving to Bayern Munich would be a major change. But according to the young goalkeeper, settling in at his new club happened much faster than he expected.
Speaking to Bayern Munich’s club magazine Säbener51, Urbig opened up about leaving Köln and discovering what life is really like inside Bayern Munich:
“I will always have an emotional connection with Köln. I wish the club nothing but the best – unless they are playing against us.
At first, I only knew Bayern Munich from the outside. But once I got to know the club from within, I quickly realized how human and open everyone at the club is. From the outside, ‘Mia San Mia’ can often sound like just a slogan, but today I know that it is genuinely lived here. And that feels really good. That was certainly one of the reasons why I felt very quickly that I was in the right place here,” Urbig said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
Urbig’s comments offer an interesting perspective on the culture at Bayern Munich. From the outside, “Mia San Mia” can easily be viewed as nothing more than a famous club motto. For Urbig, however, experiencing the environment firsthand has given the phrase an entirely different meaning.
After more than ten years in Köln, leaving a club that played such an important role in his development could never be easy. But Urbig appears to have found a new home in Munich, surrounded by a group that has made him feel welcome from the beginning.
Now, his goal is to continue developing and prove that he belongs at Bayern Munich.
