UCF entered the 2026 campaign fueled by renewed optimism.
Head coach Scott Frost returned for his second season, which went swimmingly during his first stint with the program. He returned a bulk of the staff. And the Knights addressed one of their biggest struggles of the 2020s decade, landing an established quarterback in Alonza Barnett III.
But Barnett was lost due to a “significant” hamstring injury, according to Frost, in a 12-7 loss at Pittsburgh in Week 2. Thus, UCF was forced to start its 12th
different quarterback since 2022 on Saturday, handing the reins to FIU transfer Keyone Jenkins.
While the Knights scored 44 points behind their new quarterback, the Bounce House remained on edge for the majority of the contest as UCF survived Georgia State, 44-30.
Jenkins finished just 7-of-17 for 86 yards in his first start in Orlando, but UCF leaned heavily on the backfield down its starting quarterback. Duke Watson was the star of the show in his career-high 177-yard outing. The Louisville transfer opened the contest with a 14-yard touchdown, and when the Knights operated with their greatest sense of desperation coming out of halftime, Watson restored order with a go-ahead 63-yard touchdown. He provided UCF a 27-24 lead on the first snap of the third quarter, and the Knights never fell behind again.
Still, Georgia State — which already doubled its win total from last year’s 1-11 finish — remained within striking distance for nearly the entire contest. Quarterback Cameran Brown more than tripled UCF’s passing output with a 282-yard showing, while running back Qwantavius Wiggins added 125 rushing yards in a balanced offense which out-gained the Knights, 485-390. Wiggins shifted the energy of the 44,620 in the Bounce House from enthusiastic to nervous in the middle of the second quarter. His 78-yard run erased an early 17-7 deficit, handing Georgia State a 21-17 advantage. The Panthers remained in front at halftime, 24-20, settling for a 22-yard field goal on the final play of the second quarter.
Georgia State remained competitive until under 90 seconds remained. Jenkins broke a 27-27 tie in the waning seconds of the third quarter on his first of two rushing touchdowns. Then, UCF opted not to risk a 4th-and-1 in the middle of the fourth quarter, sending Will Stone out for a 24-yard field goal to secure a 10-point lead. Georgia State ultimately cut that lead to 37-30 with 1:52 remaining and then sent the hands team onto the field for an onside kick. The Panthers recovered and nearly swung the outlook of the game, however, an illegal touching penalty was called, breathing a sigh of relief into the Orlando crowd.
UCF ran right down the field, and Jenkins sealed the victory with a 3-yard quarterback keeper several plays after the onside kick.
Georgia State (2-1, 0-0 Sun Belt) finally took its first loss of the season, but the Panthers weren’t far behind in a hostile Big 12 environment. Dell McGee’s game has shown its merit as potential Sun Belt contenders thus far, but before conference play commences, it returns to Atlanta to host Northern Illinois next Saturday.
UCF (2-1, 0-0 Big 12) improves to 10-2 in non-conference games since joining the Big 12. The Knights have thrived in September over the years, but conference play has been the greater challenge. UCF must navigate the waters of the Big 12 — at least for the foreseeable future — without Barnett. Next up on the docket is a home game against TCU for the second meeting between the programs as Big 12 foes.
