Roob’s Observations: Can Howie Roseman keep Uar Bernard and Josh Weru on the 53? – NBCSP WOULD HOWIE CONSIDER BRINGING BACK THIS FORMER EAGLE? We know Howie Roseman loves bringing former Eagles back to Philly. He does it all the time (Marcus Epps, C.J. Gardner-Johnson, Vinny Curry, Nick Foles, Jordan Howard, DeSean Jackson, Jordan Matthews, many others). We also know that with Eli Stowers struggling this preseason Roseman could be in the market
for a second receiving tight end who could be an upgrade over Grant Calcaterra or E.J. Jenkins. Here’s an idea: Zach Ertz. Ertz is reportedly healthy after tearing his right ACL in the Commanders’ loss to the Vikings in Minneapolis last December. Ertz is 35, but he can still play. We saw him catch 11 balls for 104 yards in the 2024 NFC Championship Game and last year before he got hurt he was in the top 10 among all tight ends in catches and yards and on pace for 65 catches and 659 yards. He played with Jalen Hurts in 2020 and the first half of 2021, before he was traded to Arizona, so he’s got some chemistry with the quarterback. Ertz has made over $80 million in his 13-year career, so he won’t be looking for a big payday. He’s a class act and still has strong ties with Philly through his Ertz Family Foundation. One side note to this: Ertz is fifth all-time among tight ends with 825 catches and only needs 11 receptions to break Harold Carmichael’s franchise record of 589 receptions, and when he was traded back in 2021 he said he’d love to come back one day and finish his career here. Probably unlikely but ya never know.

Tight end has overtaken safety as the most likely area Roseman might address via trade or by some other means. The Eagles were probably expecting Stowers to need time, especially when it came to blocking. But he rarely practiced with Hurts, if at all, and recently suffered a setback with his hamstring. Redshirting the second-rounder would set off alarms, so it’s unlikely Roseman takes that route. But a swap — or signing a veteran like Zach Ertz off the street — would also speak volumes. Goedert is still a competent “Y” receiver, while Mundt will shoulder some of the “F” blocking responsibilities. But tight ends often need to be dual-purpose within Sean Mannion’s new Kyle Shanahan-style scheme and neither is as competent in the opposite discipline. If Stowers isn’t healthy by the opener, or is unable to contribute on special teams in the early going, Latu seems the likely fourth option. He can also fill the fullback role if Mannion adds that wrinkle to the offense.

What We Know: Brandon Graham will appear regularly on PHLY’s Eagles postgame coverage. The Super Bowl-winning defensive end retired after a 15-year Eagles career defined by his signature strip-sack in Super Bowl LII. His podcast, Unblocked, returns September 9. PHLY also added two new Eagles contributors: Brandon Lee Gowton, founder of Bleeding Green Nation, and Miles Johnson, known for Real Talk with MJ. Both join returning voices Bo Wulf, EJ Smith, and Fran Duffy across pre- and postgame programming.

iDL Uar Bernard and EDGE Joshua Weru: In the Patriots game, Weru dusted a Pats OT with a highly athletic Eurostep move, and Bernard made a couple of nice run stops. I have both Eagles “exchange dudes” on the initial 53-man roster after they proved throughout camp and in the preseason games that they have enticing traits that are worth developing over time. They’ll get one last chance to play in an NFL game this season before they’re buried on the depth chart during the regular season.

Round 2 (No. 54): Eli Stowers, TE. It has been a slow start for Stowers. He has worked primarily with the second and third teams and hasn’t had many eye-catching moments in camp. Stowers needs to develop as a blocker, and while he has the mentality to do so by all accounts, it’s going to take time. He suffered a hamstring injury in the second preseason game against the Patriots. Round 3 (No. 68): Markel Bell, OT. Bell has been the best Eagles rookie this summer, looking smooth in pass protection while creating lanes in the run game. He is in position to serve as the swing tackle and might be Lane Johnson’s eventual replacement at right tackle.

How would you grade Jalen Hurts’ training camp? Berman: By letter grade, I’ll give him a B/B-. He practiced three weeks without DeVonta Smith and Makai Lemon, and any quarterback would look better with Smith. Hurts adjusted to the offense and embraced changes to footwork, cadence, operating under center, and throwing across the middle. Hurts calls it “sponge mode” this time of year. There’s something to be said about his willingness to embrace change at this point in his career. He made several high-level passes that Super Bowl MVPs and franchise quarterbacks make. But there were more inconsistencies than in previous summers, with inefficient practice. There were also far more interceptions. We’ll see what translates to games. I’ve also been impressed by his mobility and am curious how that factors into the offense this season. He’s had better camps in the past with A.J. Brown and Smith on the field. But Brown’s not here this season, so that point is moot. The key is keeping Smith (and Lemon) healthy. I’d be concerned about the passing game without him.

The Eagles believe their wide receiver room features versatility in the wake of trading A.J. Brown to the New England Patriots on June 1 for a 2028 first-round draft pick and 2027 fifth. Former Green Bay Packers receiver Dontayvion Wicks, 2026 first-round selection Makai Lemon and journeyman 2019 first-rounder Hollywood Brown join a room led by DeVonta Smith, who’s coming off his third 1,000-yard season in the last four years. “You have a No. 1 receiver in DeVonta Smith, who, we’ve always believed has been a No. 1 receiver,” Sirianni said. “You have a ‘Tay Wicks who I think has great qualities of a wide receiver: I always think that my ideal receiver in the NFL, before I look at speed and before I look at anything else, [has] play strength and body quickness [to get] in and out of the breaks. And this guy has elite of both.” Brown and Elijah Moore will be tabbed to add further speed while Darius Cooper will step up for “dirty work,” Sirianni said.

Cowboys once again predicted to sign free agent LB Bobby Wagner – Blogging The Boys
Training camp has officially come and gone, and just one preseason tune-up stands between the Dallas Cowboys and the start of the 2026 regular season. Friday night will be the final chance for Cowboys players on the roster bubble to make their case, as Dallas hosts the New Orleans Saints in the preseason finale. At this point in time, there is no denying that Dallas’ roster, at least on paper, looks better than it did a year ago today. While the Cowboys seem to be in a better spot, they are nowhere close to a finished product. The Cowboys could benefit from adding some more depth, particularly on the defensive side of the ball, before the start of the regular season. If Dallas looks outside the organization to make an upgrade, linebacker will likely be near the top of their priority list. While the Cowboys did bring in Dee Winters during the spring, the long-term health concerns surrounding DeMarvion Overshown and the inexperience of rookie Jaishawn Barham may push Dallas to add another capable body to the group.
Washington Commanders roster: Three potential trade candidates – Hogs Haven
WR Dyami Brown. Dyami Brown has had a strong camp, especially of late, yet sits squarely on the roster bubble in a deep receiver group. The Stefon Diggs signing changed this position group, bumping those seemingly competing for prominent roles deeper on the depth chart. Return ability is a factor here as well, which is why Jaylin Lane and (to a lesser extent) Luke McCaffrey seem safe. That puts Brown and Treylon Burks in a bout for the No. 6 receiver spot – keeping seven doesn’t seem likely – and could make one of them a trade target. Brown could fetch a bit more considering his speed and consistent availability, and Burks is a big-play option who provides injury protection and a big-body in the pattern. Washington could trade Brown and be okay.

WR Odell Beckham Jr. The injury to Calvin Austin changes the calculus around the Giants’ wide receiver position. This is purely speculation on my part, but I do tend to agree with the initial reporting that the Giants didn’t want to sign Beckham unless it was likely that he’d make the team. I also believe that he was on the roster bubble before Austin’s injury due to the numbers game and special teams concerns. Losing Austin opened a spot on the wide receiver depth chart that seems as though it makes Beckham’s chances much more likely. In fact, playing Beckham out of the slot may even be his best alignment at this point. That said, there’s a difference between Beckham making the roster and being inactive on game day and being a real factor for the Giants. So far, Beckham has largely put good play on tape. His drop against the Miami Dolphins was bad, however he has played well away from the ball. His routes are well-run with the type of savvy and nuance we came to expect from him a decade ago, and I’m not sure I’ve ever seen him hustle to block downfield like he did against the Dolphins.

On Wednesday, the NFL and the NFL Players Association [NFLPA] announced that the sides have reached an agreement on an updated “on-field accountability system,” which was approved by a vote of the board of Player Representatives on Tuesday, and communicated to the players on Thursday. The stated goal of these changes is to, according to a joint statement from the league and the NFLPA, “make the game safer by focusing discipline on the techniques most likely to result in player injury rather than players who make isolated mistakes during competition.” As a result, five penalties will see a greater emphasis this season.
