Exciting victories like the Cleveland Browns’ win over the Green Bay Packers are few and far between — especially for a franchise long associated with heartbreak. The low expectations for the Browns this
season, in contrast to the Packers’ Super Bowl expectations, made the fourth-quarter comeback win that much more exciting. So, where does this win rank among the most memorable of the Kevin Stefanski era?
Let’s take a look.
The most memorable win during the Stefanski era is actually the one where he unfortunately had to watch from the couch due to COVID-19. This was the 2020 AFC Wild Card game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, where the Browns secured their first playoff win since 1994. Winning that game on the road in Pittsburgh was really meaningful and signaled that the team was entering a new era in Cleveland.
In Week 6 of 2023, the Browns were on their 3rd starting QB of the season, PJ Walker. They were facing an undefeated San Francisco 49ers team with Super Bowl aspirations, and few gave them a chance of winning this game. Cleveland took the lead late in the 4th quarter with a Dustin Hopkins field goal, while the 49ers missed a 41-yard field goal attempt with six seconds left. It was a stunning win and kept the Browns’ season alive during a tumultuous, injury-ridden year.
When comparing Cleveland’s win over Green Bay to these two other memorable games, it clearly deserves to be in the same conversation, but for sure below the playoff win. Given the late comeback and the expectations for the game, this game definitely ranks among the top 5 of the Stefanski era.
