Bayern Munich travelled West to take on the Billy Goats, in what was poised to be an exciting DFB-Pokal clash. Köln entered this match with surprising form in the league, outperforming what was expected of them by most, and Bayern Munich in red hot form. While only one team could advance, it was surely an exciting fixture with some clear outcomes.
FC Köln was hungry
Heart over talent is one of the most common sayings in sports, because it so consistently rings true. Köln came out hungry, and it showed. The newly promoted
Bundesliga side showed their strength as they caused Bayern Munich and Jonas Urbig all sorts of problems, right out of the gate.
Said El Mala is legit
The rumored Bayern Munich transfer target was on full display in the Pokal match against the Bavarians. Already linked with the German giants, El Mala had a chip on his shoulder to impress both sides, and he certainly did so. El Mala was held back to a degree, due to his early cautionary card, but was a bright spot for the home side.
Offense wins championships
Speaking of mantras, ‘defense wins championships’ is another one of the most common in sports. However, this one does not ring true today. In Bayern Munich’s case against Köln and frankly, all season long, they have won games with their attack. Scoring a ton of goals is a pretty fun way to win games as well.
Jonas Urbig is ready for more match time
While Manuel Neuer’s incredible start to the season has been great for Bayern Munich, it has meant bad news for Jonas Urbig. The former Köln talent got significant minutes last season, and was poised to take over Neuer’s seat before the legendary goalkeeper earned it his spot with great performances. Urbig has been under the radar ever since but should still be on track for a full time position in the coming years. He showed in this match, he is worthy of a starting role.
